Today I preached the greatest sermon I never preached!

I preached it not from a pulpit, but from a recliner chair in a chemotherapy clinic!

Why Christians Can Have Demons

There was a time when we taught in our church that Christians could not have demons. I preached long sermons stating that Christians could be oppressed, regressed, digressed, obsessed and suppressed, but never possessed. We believed that a demon could be outside a Christian oppressing him but that it could not be inside him. The reasoning I used to defend this position was that Jesus and the Holy Spirit could not live inside the same body in which demons reside. The problem was, our experience did not match our theology. When we ministered deliverance, we frequently prayed for people we knew were born-again, Spirit-filled believers–and they manifested demons! We had to face the fact that either our experience was wrong or our doctrine was wrong.

The Great Commission or Omission?

The very first commandment in the five-faceted “Great Commission” Jesus issued to the Church just prior to His ascension into Heaven was to “cast out demons!” (Mark 16:17). Casting out demons is the preeminent aspect of the Gospel of the Kingdom and the ongoing ministry of Jesus. Next to salvation itself and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, nothing in the Kingdom of God is more important, needed, and necessary. Yet, because the vast majority of churches have refused to obey Jesus’ commandments comprising the Great Commission, sadly, for the most part, in most churches, the Great Commission has been the Great Omission.

Debunking the “Christians Can’t Have Demons” Theory

For Christians to claim Christians cannot have demons simply because they are Born Again is like saying their car cannot break down simply because they are Born Again, or even sillier, that they don’t have to fill their gas tank or change the oil or refill the oil if it is low because they are Born Again, or that they are free from the Law of Gravity because they are a Born Again Christian. That’s all mysticism, which is naturalizing the spiritual and/or spiritualizing the natural.

Is The Devil Really Defeated? Well, Yes and No!

To many people, including many who claim to be Christians or believers in Christ, the matter of the existence and operations of the devil on earth are either basically an unknown or a spiritual conundrum. That is understandable, given the fact that unbiblical or in some cases, antibiblical, preaching and teaching on the matter is ubiquitous, even in the context of self-purported Christian churches. The central theory of that biblically-incorrect teaching to varying degrees is the somewhat misleading assertion: “Jesus defeated the devil on the Cross of Calvary.” While that statement and the set of teachings it represents bears some truth, it nevertheless is not “the whole truth and nothing but the truth!” Rather, it is actually partial truth.
