The Fallacy of Personal Pastors (Part 1)

The Fallacy of Personal Pastors (Part 1)

[Editor’s Note: This article is adapted from the book, CHARISMATIC CAPTIVATION, by Steven Lambert. The book exposes the widespread problem of authoritarian abuse in Neo-Pentecostal church-groups, and explains how it became infused into the very fabric, foundation, and functions of the Neo-Pentecostal church arising out of a false movement known as the Discipleship/Shepherding Movement (1970-77). References to “Discipleship” or “Shepherding” (and variables) doctrines, teachings, proponents and participants, and so forth, allude to those pertinences that arose out of that movement. The content of this article is contextual to the entirety of the book, and is best understood by reading the book. A small portion of the book’s content is published in the posted articles listed and linked at the end of this article.] _______________________ The adulterated concept of “spiritual covering” itself is problematic enough (for more on that subject, read …Read Article

The Myth of Spiritual Covering (Part 1)

The Myth of Spiritual Covering (Part 1)

Let me begin by stating plainly and directly: “spiritual covering” as theorized by the Discipleship theosophy is an absolute MYTH. No semblance of the Shepherding teaching version of “spiritual covering” exists anywhere within the pages of Scripture. “Spiritual covering,” in the vein it is presented by proponents and propagators of these hyper-authoritarian teachings, is an outright deception! It is a complete fabrication concocted by the originators of these fallacious doctrines as a supposed pretext for facilitation of entirely self-aggrandizing objectives of subjugation, domination, and control.

Our Most Critical Need

Our Most Critical Need

“The Glory of the Latter House shall be greater than the Former!” (Hag. 2:9) The hour we live in without equivocation is the most spiritually profound of all of history, and certainly of all “His-story.” Indeed, it can be no less when we are told that all of the historical Biblical events comprising His-story—i.e., the history of Israel—“happened to them as an example (illustration) and they were written for OUR instruction upon whom the ends of the ages have come” (1 Cor. 10:11; cf., Rom. 15:4). God is therein declaring that the entire content of the Old Testament—the events it chronicles and the wisdom and instruction those events illustrate—are and always were intended for the true end-time believers comprising the end-times Church that Jesus is building! Thanks for reading this article! If you enjoy the spiritually enriching articles on Spirit …Read Article

Counting The Cost

Counting The Cost

The following is an excerpt of my book, The Mystery of the Kingdom, which is an exposition of what Jesus indicated was “The Paramount Parable”—The Parable of the Sower—meaning it was the most important of all His parables, in that it revealed the keys to the “mystery of the kingdom” of God. The excerpt is taken from a chapter in which I examine the second category of hearers in the parable who Jesus described as being “like rocky ground.” He went on to reveal that this category of hearers of the Word are only “temporary believers,” who “have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary” (Mk. 4:17). Luke’s account of this part of Jesus’ parable aptly describes their walk this way: “they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away” (Lk. 8:13). This is an …Read Article

Polemic Prophetic Preaching

Polemic Prophetic Preaching

In an earlier post in which I was commenting on matters inherent in the Grassley Investigation, I wrote: “A ‘Day of Reckoning’ is surely coming to many irresponsible and unscrupulous ministries.” I prophesied that we are about see a fulfillment of the Prophet Malachi’s prophecy (Mal. 3) in the Church that will begin with the leaders.” I also wrote: “…it is a shameful indictment on the modern church, as well as on purporting neo-prophets that a Senator’s spokesman has to be the spokesman God uses to issue the prophetic rebuke concerning the excesses found in some portions of the Neo-Pentecostal Church, ‘The Christian public should have demanded a higher level of accountability a long time ago.’” I further prophesied a release and sending forth of true prophets God would be initiating this year of 2008, who will come “proclaiming piercing prophetic messages that …Read Article

A Desperate Cry For Revival In Charismatic Camelot

A Desperate Cry For Revival In Charismatic Camelot

Publishers Note: Charisma Magazine, founded by Stephen Strang, was originally an organ of my home church, Calvary Assembly of Winter Park, Florida. Roy Harthern, Benny Hinn’s father-in-law, was the influential senior leader of the church at the time. Harthern convinced the church financial board that Calvary should commit quite a large sum of money to the upstart of this new magazine which would essentially be the church’s PR organ. The year it was launched Calvary also helped to underwrite the launching of another upstart ministry I had a part in founding and developing, Festival of Praise, under the leadership of music extraordinaire, Thurlow Spurr. Because of my involvement in FOP and other areas of ministry, I had firsthand personal knowledge of Charisma’s birthing. What began as a small non-commercial magazine intended to be the in-house print organ of one of …Read Article

The Consequences of Covetousness

The Consequences of Covetousness

As I stated on the previous post, I am convinced this whole matter I am discussing in these previous several posts is far from being a mere side-bar, but rather is a prophetic warning from God. I believe it is a critical Kingdom Matter that the Church must turn its attention to in order to be delivered from the dastardly and destructive spirit of mammon that now pervades the Church. Many individuals in the Church are obsessed with the spirit of materialism, and if they continue in their ways and in giving place to the devil, what is an obsession now, will continue to escalate and take more and more ground in their heart until materialism, the love of money, will totally possess them. Some who were once bona fide believers and members of the Body of Christ, have become …Read Article

Idolatry of Trusting in Riches

Idolatry of Trusting in Riches

Keep deception and lies far from me,Give me neither poverty nor riches;Feed me with the food that is my portion. (Prv. 30:8) As I have been indicating in some previous posts, in many Kingdom-related matters, the difference between truth and error is excesses and extremes. Those excesses extremes can be at either end of the spectrum. Such is the case with the real truth regarding the matter of prosperity and success versus whatever is the diametric opposite of that, which I suppose is poverty and failure. The real truth, that is, the Truth of the mind of God that is both concealed and revealed in Christ through the Spirit of Truth, lies somewhere between these opposing messages. The extremes on both sides are error and deception. We must be careful not to swerve too far to either side so as …Read Article

The Deceitfulness of Riches

The Deceitfulness of Riches

This is the third part of message related to the previous few posts regarding issues raised by the Grassley Investigation, in particular, the “Prosperity Gospel” as it is preached by the ministries cited in that congressional probe. If you did not read, the previous posts, please do, in order to have the proper backdrop and foundation for the message in this post. Otherwise, you may draw erroneous conclusions from reading this post as a stand-alone article. Keep deception and lies far from me,Give me neither poverty nor riches;Feed me with the food that is my portion. Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion. (Prv. 30:8) This is the second of a three-part message related to the last few posts regarding issues raised by the Grassley Investigation. As I have been indicating in some previous messages, in many Kingdom-related matters, the difference between truth and error is extremes. Those extremes can be at either end of the spectrum. Satan is a master at taking truth and misapplying it or taking it to extremes and thereby transforming truth into error. We see that in Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness after being baptized in the Spirit when the Holy Spirit rested upon Him in the form of a dove. Immediately thereafter, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by …Read Article

Fiery Trials — Why They Come!

Fiery Trials — Why They Come!

The original post in this series posed the question, Grassley Investigation — Demonic or Divine? (If you have not read the first two posts, I urge you to do so.) In the course of the two previous posts I have been indicating what I believe is the answer to that question, which is — both. The Spirit made it clear who our adversary is, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. YOUR ADVERSARY, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Pet. 5:8). In order to be able to understand many of the questions of life with definitiveness and complete confidence, a believer must settle the issue once and at the very core of their spirit. God is NOT the believer’s adversary. The adversary is the one who authors and brings forth adversity. This …Read Article

Grassley Investigation — Probed Ministries Respond

Grassley Investigation — Probed Ministries Respond

In the wake of the Grassley Investigation, which was the topic of my previous post, there are reports that the response of most of those ministries being probed is one of adamant denial and angry disputation. The investigation is focused on six prominent ministries: Benny Hinn, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, David and Joyce Meyer; Randy and Paula White; Creflo and Taffi Dollar; and Eddie Long. Several of them are now publicizing their view that such an investigation by a government body is illegal, unjustified, and improperly intrusive, along with their vow to therefore resist and in some cases stonewall the Congressional committee’s inquiries. I am neither judging nor condemning any of the persons or ministries named, such is not my purpose, and we are proscribed from doing so by Scripture. However, I do not believe that denial, disputation, and enmity …Read Article

Grassley Investigation — Demonic or Divine

By Dr. Steven Lambert The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has recently begun a probe into the financial practices of some religious organizations claiming Non-Profit Tax-exempt status under federal laws. Senator Charles Grassley, the Committee’s ranking Republican member, as part of the larger probe, has launched an investigation of six of the nation’s most prominent charismatic ministries: Benny Hinn, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland, David and Joyce Meyer; Randy and Paula White; Creflo and Taffi Dollar; and Eddie Long. The Iowa lawmaker, who spearheaded past whistle-blowing crusades of secular non-profits such as the American Red Cross, based on citizen complaints received by his office, sent letters to these six organizations demanding they provide him within a few weeks various types of audited financial records documenting lavish purchases, extraordinary expenditures, and inordinate compensation amounts, among other financial activity, along with governing board meeting …Read Article

Leading or Lording?

Leading or Lording?

Multitudes of sincere and trusting believers are caught in the virtually invisible web of religious captivation in Charismatic and other Neo-Pentecostal churches, and don’t know it. They are unaware victims of spiritual abuse and exploitation under the heavy-hand of hyper-authoritarianism. That is to say, the leadership of the church-group of which they are a part is dominating, controlling, and manipulating their followers, and exploiting them for their own personal gain and private kingdom-building.

A Vision: Recent Florida Fires and US Drought

We must receive the revelation of the Spirit that God’s anointed and appointed Davy Crocketts and Daniel Boones (spiritual pioneers)—the “free radicals” of the Spirit—who do not fit into the prototypical modern molds of spiritual leadership also require our spiritual and financial support in order to accomplish the missions to which they’ve been called on behalf of the entire Body. Relative to the rest, they may be “far out,” and far out ahead of the rest of the Body, but that grants no right to ignore and marginalize those individuals, nor their ministries. We must not be guilty of saying, “I have no need of thee!”

Decreeing Wealth and Riches In Your House!

Decreeing Wealth and Riches In Your House!

It’s a shame that one would even have to preface an article about such a totally biblical issue as the one addressed in this post. But, I feel compelled to do so. That is the unfortunate result of the proliferation of counterfeit gospels. Please understand that I am not one of those “prosperity preachers.” I do believe the modern “Prosperity Gospel” has brought immeasureable spiritual harm to the Body of Christ at-large on a global basis. However, too often we are wont to “throw out the baby with the bathwater.” There are a great number of passages of Scripture telling us how much God indeed does want us to “prosper and be in (good) health even as our soul prospers.” But, the last part of that Scripture is the weightier and balancing part. Prosperity, success, and divine healing and health …Read Article

The Promise of Blessings Upon Your Children

The Promise of Blessings Upon Your Children

God declares and decrees in His Word that the posterity of those people who fear the LORD and find great delight in his commands “will be MIGHTY in the land!” They are not wimps or casper-milquetoast people! They don’t live their lives in a corner, cowering in fear and trepidation. They do not live their lives anonymously; they are known and noticed wherever they go. People know who they are! Perhaps more tellingly, as with Jesus and the Apostle Paul, demons know who they are, as well. Whatever their hand finds to do, they do it with all their MIGHT. They’ve established a habit of being STRONG in the Lord and in the POWER of HIS MIGHT! They’ve learned that the joy of the Lord is their strength. They are indefatigible, indestructable, and invincible. THEY ARE MIGHTY PEOPLE!

The Blessings Coming to the Righteous

This entry is part 7 of 7 in the series Reclaiming Fatherhood and Restoring Fathers

Yesterday I was reading Psalm 112, and was totally blown away by the prophetic promises it contains! I just had to write to share with you what the Lord was speaking to me about you through it. I say “you,” because I believe you are one who fears the Lord and finds delight in His commands! Psalm 1121 Praise the LORD. Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who finds great delight in his commands.2 His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.3 Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.4 Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.5 Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice.6 Surely he will …Read Article

A New Breed Of Preacher

A New Breed Of Preacher

A New Movement of Fearless Uncompromising Preachers -by Greg Gordon God is raising up a new breed of preachers in our day. People are sick of modern-day soft preaching that does not move our consciences anymore then a worldly movie would. God is going to raise them up, they will not be bred in modern day seminaries or bible colleges. They will speak against the whole system that is raising anemic preachers and teachers. Their messages will be bold, strong, pointed; it will offend many but save many. Their preaching will bear witness to their calling. God will be in their messages and the fear of God will come with their message. God has always been faithful to have a voice in every generation. Surely we find ourselves in a time as the Psalmist lamented: “There is no more any …Read Article
