Loved by the masses, he was detested by many of the clergy who refused him their pulpits. Undaunted, he preached in the open fields to massive crowds of all sects and denominations.

At a time when the population of Boston was estimated at twenty thousand, he preached to an estimated crowd of 25,000 on the Boston Common. Great revival seemed to erupt everywhere he went. Denominational walls were broken down and for the first time the scattered American colonists began to see themselves as a single people with one Divine destiny. Through his incessant labors and his love for America, George Whitefield (1713-1770) helped prepare the way for the formation of the United States of America. If You’re Outraged And You Don’t Know Why, This Column Is for You

Trigger warning: If you’re one of those precious little snowflakes who #StandWithMizzou and support the #MillionStudentMarch, be warned: the following contains potentially “hurtful” microaggressions that may invade the reality-free sanctuary of your Safe Space™ and leave you cowering in the fetal position.

If this is you, then read at your own risk.

For everyone else, let’s define the terms:

  • Trigger: noun, 1. potentially distressful words or learning materials likely to cause PTSD in Millennials who’ve been helicopter-parented into a frozen state of perpetual dysfunction. Paradoxically the word “trigger” is, itself, a trigger, as it is likely to evoke images of scary, loud bang-bangs.
  • Trigger warning: noun, 1. the self-wrought burden bohemian professors now face to preemptively pamper and advise the little monsters of their own making that they’re about to say something that might send them into a fear-driven and jaw-droppingly disrespectful frenzy of utterly irrational, self-righteous indignation (see schadenfreude).
  • Microaggressions: noun, 1. any innocuous word or phrase that, whether intentional or not, gives a liberal an excuse to feign offense (e.g., “America is exceptional;” “When it comes to race, I’m colorblind;” or, “You microaggress like a girl”).
  • Safe Space: noun, 1. progressive circle of self-entitled, “everyone-gets-a-trophy” pansies free of critical thinking, differing opinions, reality and oxygen.

At the heart of all this is rebellion for the sake of rebellion. It was bad in the ’60s, but it’s far worse now. At least in the ’60s the misguided revolutionaries had the courage of their convictions and would face down the National Guard. Today, they flee, arms in the air, for their Safe Space™ vacuum chamber.

Ayn Rand once wrote, “You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality.”

Those consequences are on display now.

It’s been said—by whom I don’t recall—that, to conservatives, George Orwell’s 1984was a cautionary tale. To “progressives,” it’s a how-to manual.

You thought last week’s outburst of faux outrage on America’s liberal college campuses was something new. It’s not. While it looks a bit like the countercultural hippie revolution of the 1960s (that’s the aesthetic they’re going for), today’s “Million Student March” and the other race-baiting, “white privilege,” hissy-fit “protests” at Mizzou, Yale and other colleges don’t characterize the counterculture at all. They are the culture. Conservative truth-tellers now represent the counter-culture.

Indeed, the neophyte Millennials raising their arms in the clenched fist salute (also known as the “Red Salute” by cultural Marxists such as the Soviet Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War and Mao Tse-tung during the Chinese Civil War) are, unwittingly, conforming en masse to the empty romance of “progressive” non-conformity. Free thinkers? Hardly. These kids need an instruction manual for toilet paper. Cute as the little buggers may be, they’re just a gaggle of self-entitled, uber-naïve, malleable Marxist robots.

It’s eerily reminiscent of Chairman Mao’s youthful Chinese “Red Guard” (1966-76). As Encyclopedia Britannica notes, under Mao’s Communist regime, “groups of militant university and high school students [were] formed into paramilitary units as part of the Cultural Revolution.” These easily manipulated young people (sound familiar?) who responded “to his summons fancied themselves as new revolutionary rebels pledged to eliminating all remnants of the old culture in China, as well as purging all supposedly bourgeois elements within the government.” Mao sought to abolish what he called the “Four Olds”: old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas.

How “progressive” of him.

Like the Chinese Red Guard, today’s American equivalent wants lots of free stuff—like free college—and likewise seeks to undermine, if not completely destroy, all traditional values. Mao’s platform shared the hallmarks of modern “progressivism”: entitlement, redistribution, moral relativism, atheism and tyranny.

“While engaging in marches, meetings, and frenzied propagandizing,” concludes Britannica, “Red Guard units attacked and persecuted local party leaders as well as schoolteachers and school officials, other intellectuals, and persons of traditional views. Several hundred thousand people died in the course of these persecutions.”

America’s Red Guard is just warming up. These “progressive” puppets protest everything at once and nothing at all. They demand that their liberal mentors move with them from the leftward fringes, straight off the cliff’s edge.

Or resign.

And so the grown-ups bow to the babes and resign, cower, coddle and apologize, feeding this suckling brat with the mother’s milk of weakness. Rather than placating these already overindulged beasts, it only makes them stronger and encourages them to issue additional, and increasingly absurd, demands.

As long as we allow business as usual in this collegiate shop of horrors, these cultural Marxist change agents will keep manufacturing fake racial incidents, anti-LGBT “hate crimes” and any number of similarly ridiculous, yet equally effective, pretexts for remaining perpetually POed.

Winston Churchill famously observed, “If you’re not a liberal at 20, you have no heart; if you’re not a conservative at 40, you have no brain.”

Until the adults put the children in time-out, this destructive AstroTurf movement, with it’s delicate yet blindly determined little flowers, will continue to blossom.

“Feed me, Seymour!”###

THERE’S ONLY ONE JUDGE WHO MATTERS (AND IT’S NOT KENNEDY)

Today, five Supreme Court justices forced upon the United States a fictitious “right” to state-sanctioned homosexuality in a form to be referred to as “marriage.” From this day on, we can add Obergefell v. Hodges next to Roe v. Wade on the list of the most outrageously unconstitutional SCOTUS decisions ever rendered.

It doesn’t matter that 20 years ago, creating such a “right” was both morally and legally unthinkable, across the globe, on all sides of the political aisle.

It doesn’t matter that the U.S. Constitution doesn’t even address the issue of marriage. It doesn’t matter that millions and millions of Americans legally went to the polls to uphold real marriage. It doesn’t matter that the polls or research on the subject of so-called “homosexual marriage” are deliberately skewed or even based on faked data, as in the recent case of a study retracted from the academic journal Science.

It also doesn’t matter that the Founders would have been aghast at today’s decision. And it doesn’t matter that two of the five justices who upended marriage today unapologetically officiated at so-called “homosexual weddings” and refused to show ethical responsibility by recusing themselves from this case altogether.

That’s because today isn’t about the rule of law, the Constitution, what is morally right or ethical or even what is ultimately real. When it comes down to it, it’s about the revolution — the sexual revolution that has reached its zenith at the hands of five unelected justices.

Years ago, I heard former U.S. Rep. Bob Dornan speak at a pro-life rally, and I’ve never forgotten what he said (and I paraphrase from memory):

“For years, those of us on the side of life have been treating this abortion issue as if it were a debate. ‘Hey, we’re the ones with all the facts on our side!’ we say. ‘Babies are human beings. They’re alive. It’s murder to kill a human being. How can America not see this? Why aren’t we winning?’ And yet we’ve forgotten the most important thing. If this were a debate, we’d have won it years ago, because we do have all the truth, all the facts and all the science on our side. What we need to understand is that while we were trying to debate the pro-abortion activists, they were at war.”

You’ve seen it, haven’t you? When the Big Gay Bulldozer mows down Brendan Eich, Barronelle Stutzman, the Benham brothers, the Kleins or Craig James, there are no tears shed for these people who have lost their livelihoods and/or reputations. No one worries about the harassment or even death threats that are hurled at these people behind the scenes. It doesn’t matter how they were treated or what their First Amendment rights are. It’s all about the Revolution, man.

When the Human Rights Campaign puts enormous pressure on businesses to support “full LGBT equality” and ranks them through its “Corporate Equality Index,” with companies actually losing points for having any “anti-LGBT blemishes” on recent records, there’s no debate. You’re either with HRC, or you’re targeted homophobes. Nor did the far-Left Southern Poverty Law Center feel the need to retract its “Hate Map,” which identifies and smears Christian organizations, merely because it inspired a homosexual domestic terrorist to storm the Family Research Council with the intent to commit mass murder. It’s all about the Revolution, man.

There is no “gay gene.” It doesn’t matter. The CDC states that men who have sex with men account for 59 percent of those who have HIV and comprise 66 percent of those who contract HIV each year. It doesn’t matter. The Bible is clear that homosexuality is sinful. It doesn’t matter, homophobe. The Revolution is the thing!

Saul Alinsky’s eighth Rule for Radicals was: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.” As he put it, “Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new.” This is what Big Gay has done and done effectively. Its activists have applied intense, constant pressure on every side, through every medium, to achieve their goals, and nobody has been immune to that pressure – especially not judges or politicians. And we must note that among secularists, enormous and constant social pressure — aided and abetted by means of high-pressure propaganda and duplicitous Newspeak – can be very hard to resist if you have no true north in the inerrant Word of God. In fact, I believe in the coming days, it very well may be that only those who are grounded in the Word of God will maintain the true north on marriage and sexuality.

Big Gay knows this. Christians and their Bibles are a problem. This is why one of the next big pushes will be to try to get Christians to accept a twisted and false view of Scripture that upends texts like Matthew 19, Romans 1, Genesis 19 and 1 Corinthians 6.

Expect homosexual activists like Matthew Vines and other self-identified “gay Christians” like him to try to come in and influence your church or denomination, people who will twist the Scriptures to try to deceive you. There will be pressure on you to “show the love of Jesus” and “stop hate-filled discrimination,” but it’s just Alinsky Rule 8. Do not let them deceive you. God speaks clearly in His Word on the homosexuality and marriage issues, and we must stay the course. Christian, you can read your Bible for yourself. You already know what it says. And if you don’t, you’d better get on that. Because if you are a Christian, you are required to be on the alert against the one who would whisper in your ear, “Did God really say …?”

Yes, this is war. But then, we sometimes forget that the Christian is always at war. Yet our war is not against Big Gay or the Supreme Court or the media. Our true enemy, as we know, isn’t even human. Our weapons are not physical or carnal. Ultimately, this war we’re in is spiritual. As 2 Corinthians 10:4 puts it: “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” And what are these weapons? The breastplate of righteousness. The shield of faith, with which we can “extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” The helmet of salvation. And the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18)

In the evil day, we are to put on this whole armor of God and be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Why? So we can take our “stand against the devil’s schemes.” It’s true that today’s Supreme Court decision is a travesty, a total violation of moral and natural law, the highest peak thus far in the current revolution. And so it’s imperative that we continue to make the case, on the civil and political and moral levels, for true marriage and for our First Amendment freedoms. Like we’ve been doing for four decades against Roe v. Wade, we must do whatever we can, on the human level, to reverse this ruling. But the bigger picture is the spiritual war and the duty we now have to stand. “Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” (Eph. 6:13)

There are all kinds of repercussions coming down the pike after today’s decision. Expect polygamy to become legal at some point; there’s no keeping it at bay anymore. But it’s also very likely that life will become much more difficult for Christians, too. Our tax exemptions may be going away. Our schools, universities, Bible colleges and seminaries will feel the pressure. Our churches will come under fire. Some of us could lose our businesses. There will be hatred and insults, and we will feel temptations all around us to give in, to compromise, to give up and to downplay the Word of God. But we must not do that. We cannot do that, any more than the apostles could give in and compromise the gospel to get along with Rome.

We know we must stand because there is another Judge, a higher Judge who is also the Lawgiver and the one who kept the Law perfectly on our behalf as Savior. The Lord Jesus Christ is no fallen ideologue who should have recused Himself before rendering a lawless judgment. No, His moral law is holy, perfect, right and eternal, and His judgments are always perfect. And on that final day, He will judge the world in righteousness: You, me, your neighbor and yes, those Supreme Court justices, too.

In light of the judgment to come, we must not only stand our ground, but we must proclaim to those around us that that day is coming! They need to hear that God is commanding everyone to repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ while there is still time. “For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31) This is what the apostles preached. This is what Christians throughout history have preached. And this is what we must preach, too.

The Revolution will not last forever, but the Kingdom of God will. No matter how disheartened we may be today, that is always good news.###

The Shameful Social Gospel

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth.” (Romans 1:16)

For various reasons, Christians of different sorts have tinkered with “the gospel of Christ” as though it needed adjustments. Not major alterations, most will tell you, but just some minor tweaking here and there. The changes often begin by one’s declaring that there is no real change involved, simply a shift in emphasis. Yet, no matter what the rationale may be, the end result is being “ashamed of the gospel of Christ.”

To be “ashamed of the gospel” covers a number of attitudes from being totally embarrassed by it to thinking one can improve upon it a bit to make it more acceptable. One example of the former is the recent claim by an Emerging Church author that the teaching regarding Christ’s paying the full penalty for the sins of mankind through His substitutionary death on the Cross is irrelevant and viewed as “a form of cosmic child abuse.” More subtle examples include trying to make the gospel seem less exclusive, and the “softening” of the consequences from which the gospel saves mankind, such as the wrath of God and the Lake of Fire. How Liberalism Violates All 10 Commandments

One of my readers, we’ll call him Moses, is the publisher of a mainstream newspaper in California. He wrote me the other day with an insightful observation. Since Moses works in one of the most liberal industries, in one of the most liberal states in the union, I won’t divulge his real name. We don’t want Moses tarred, feathered and banished to Oklahoma with a scarlet “C,” for Christian, emblazoned on his Harris Tweed sport coat. (Note: I have antipathy toward neither Oklahoma – I once lived there – nor Harris Tweed, though I do recommend against wearing Harris Tweed in Oklahoma. Especially in the summer.)

“Matt, think about this,” wrote Moses. “Every one of the Ten Commandments is explicitly violated by a principle of the left.”

So I thought about it.

And you know what? Slap me with a Red River catfish if Moses ain’t exactly right.

To be sure, as individuals, we’ve all violated many, if not most or all, of the 10 Commandments. In our fallen, sinful state we have an inherent propensity to rebel against God’s perfect and holy will for our lives. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Thank God for making available a path, narrow as it is, for eternal redemption and salvation through Christ Jesus.

Still, there is a difference between individual sins and a philosophical worldview that embraces those sins as a matter of course. Modern liberalism – “progressivism,” leftism, secularism, pick your poison — is built upon, by and for sin itself. Liberalism’s entire fabric is constructed by precept planks that are soaked through and stained by man’s arrogant rebellion against our Creator God.

In sum, liberalism is folly. It represents man’s futile attempt to disorder God’s natural order. It’s the unholy brainchild of God’s very first enemy, given by that enemy to God’s favored creation, us, with the sole purpose of destroying that creation.

Unfortunately, we’re all too happy to help. Liberalism just formalizes the process, making sin public policy.

Volumes could be penned on the myriad ways in which the central tenets of liberalism violate each of the Ten Commandments. The following is a much truncated analysis:

The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17):

1. Thou Shalt Have No Gods Before Me.

At worst, liberalism denies the very existence of God in the forms of atheism and secularism, while, at best, it adopts that wonderfully “inclusive” blasphemy called religious pluralism. Pluralism presumes to give the false gods of false religions equal footing and denies Christ as He defined Himself: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Liberal “Christianity” falls under this category. It’s pluralism with a Christian stamp.

Secular humanism, liberalism’s prevailing false religion, denies God altogether and crowns man as king over himself and the measure of all things. “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die.”

2. Thou Shalt Not Make Graven Images.

We’re talking idolatry here. Liberalism is built on it. First, there’s literal idolatry (the worship of man-made idols, animals or inanimate objects) enjoyed by our New Age friends. And then there’s everything else: pantheistic environmentalism, the idols of “reproductive freedom,” “sexual liberation and equality,” etc.

Essentially, liberalism worships the created over the Creator. Liberalism also worships the sins of the flesh (see Commandments No. 1, 6 and 7).

3. Thou Shalt Not Take the Lord’s Name in Vain.

To deny God is to take the Lord’s name in vain. To deny God as He defines Himself is to take the Lord’s name in vain. To misrepresent God, to call other gods God or to deny the deity of Christ is to take the Lord’s name in vain. Liberalism does this and much more. Many liberals also mock Christ, Christianity and Christians. They revile the exclusive nature of Jesus, His commands and His faithful followers. They hate truth.

4. Remember to Keep Holy the Sabbath.

This one is a bit tricky as it is widely understood to fall under the Jewish ceremonial law, not the moral law – the old covenant, not the new. Christ Himself healed (worked) on the Sabbath. That said, many Christians still view Sunday as the Sabbath and do, indeed, keep it holy. Not all liberals (there are certainly liberal Jews), but liberalism at large denies the Sabbath any significance whatsoever, much less a holy significance.

5. Honor Thy Father and Thy Mother.

Liberalism seeks to supplant parents with “progressive” government. It diminishes parental rights and encourages children to rebel against the antiquated conventions held by mom and dad. It denies that children even need a mother and father and bristles at the “heteronormative” lack of “gender neutrality” inherent within the very words “mother and father.” The sin-centered, counter-biblical notion of “gay marriage” desecrates God’s design for true marriage and family and is intended to undermine these cornerstone institutions.

6. Thou Shalt Not Murder.

Abortion, euthanasia, “pro-choice,” “reproductive rights,” “death with dignity.” Need I say more? Sacrosanct is the liberal rite of passage for a feminist mother to slaughter her own child in the womb. Fifty-five million dead babies later, liberals continue to worship at the pagan altar of “choice” (see Commandments No. 1 and 2).

7. Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery.

This means all sexual immorality as identified in the scriptures, to include marital infidelity, fornication, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, et al. Liberalism, it seems, embraces all perversions of God’s design for human sexuality. Central to liberalism is moral relativism. When it comes to sex, you can do no wrong because there is no wrong.

8. Thou Shalt Not Steal.

With class warfare as its fuel, liberalism embraces the redistributionist philosophies of Marx and Engels. Liberalism thrives on theft. Like some completely incompetent and inefficient Robin Hood, liberal government steals from the middle class to give to the poor, thereby ensuring that liberal politicians remain in power and everyone else remains miserable.

9. Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness.

I give you Saul Alinsky from his Rules for Radicals: “The third rule of ethics of means and ends is that in war the end justifies almost any means.” As we’ve learned from Barack “you can keep your insurance” Obama, that includes lying. Liberals lie. That’s what they do. The ends justify the means. Bearing false witness about detractors of liberalism is par for the course.

10. Thou Shalt Not Covet.

Again, liberalism uses man’s inherent covetousness as the driving force behind all liberal economic policies. Creating a political climate of economic envy and class warfare gives liberal government the cover needed to take wealth from those who produce and redistribute it to those who don’t. Not only does liberalism violate this commandment, liberalism commands its adherents to do the exact opposite. “Thou shalt covet.”

As Satan “masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), so, too, does liberalism masquerade as good. It’s deceptively packaged in flowery euphemisms and feel-good sound bites that promise “equality,” “tolerance” and libertine notions of “social justice.”

Yet, in reality, liberalism, in both philosophical and practical terms, simply signifies man’s predisposition to “call evil good and good evil.” It’s sin, all dolled up and doled out.

Ronald Reagan once quipped, “I have wondered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress.”

If the Gipper had lived another couple decades, he might’ve found out.###

I’ve never recommended a book, other than the Bible, but I want to tell you about a book I’ve just finished reading called The 5,000 Year Leap: A Miracle That Changed the World.

I’m indebted to talk show host Glenn Beck for making me aware of this book. I’m not a follower of talk radio in the sense that I let it shape my opinions, but I’d be less than honest if I didn’t admit to occasionally listening to conservative talk radio over the years, as maybe many of you do, especially while traveling in my car.

I enjoy Rush Limbaugh now and then, but I can’t take too much of him at one sitting. I get especially nervous when Rush says, “Talent on loan from God.” But I am grateful for these independent voices in this hour of American history. My attitude toward all radio talkers can best be summed up in the words my mother used to use with a twinkle in her eye when she wanted to stress that a good man isn’t always right; she’d say, “His mouth isn’t exactly a prayer book.”

The 5,000 Year Leap was written by a man named, W. Cleon Skousen (1913-2006), in 1981, and has never been out of print. It is currently high on Amazon’s overall sales list, and is a book I wish every American would read. I have not only read the book I’ve “drained” it, meaning it’s become a part of me. Americans who believe in God had better wake up and realize that a well-orchestrated campaign is moving to fundamentally transform the United States into a scrupulously secular nation. If this succeeds, we will no longer enjoy our First Amendment right of “free exercise” of religion but will be forbidden to speak or display any prayers, Bible quotations or other evidences of religion in any public place or event.

The major strike force working to accomplish this consists of the American Civil Liberties Union plus various atheist groups. They are always ready to file lawsuits to get some supremacist judge to restrict religious expression. Continue reading “Secularization of America” »

Many of my articles this year on Spirit Life Magazine have addressed issues relative to President Obama’s agenda for the Islamification and Marxization of America. I make no apologies for that. In fact, I firmly believe that in doing so I am complying with a Biblical mandate consigned to all Christians:  “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them” (Eph. 5:11). I’m old enough to remember a time when many promulgators of the so-called “Social Gospel” eschewed and took umbrage at the term. Over the last half a century, though, that has totally reversed. Now, proponents of the thoroughly false “gospel” embrace and rally around the assignation.

In a recent article, concerning the second Scripture verse above, I wrote that they,

like Adams’ statement, contains a latent clue for any group of marauders possessing malevolent and self-aggrandizing intents how to set about subverting a free society for the purposes of vanquishing it—namely, dismantle and decimate its ideological and spiritual substructure.

America’s morality always has been and remains the unseen bedrock of its unrivaled, enduring success. But, that success always has had and will have its villainous enemies who are intent on obliterating it.

I followed that by a poignant quote from Karl Marx, “who today is revered by the multitudinous global disciples of his radical agenda for world-hegemony as ‘The Father of Communism,'” and whose “anti-God religion of narcissism-centric humanism (now) permeates every segment of the existing societies of the world”:

“My object in life is to dethrone God by deifying man.” –Karl Heinrich Marx, Father of Communism

I also wrote:

Thus, as Marx further prescribed in the writings comprising The Communist Manifesto…the only way the agenda of communism can succeed in any nation is that God and all religions ascribing belief in God be entirely eradicated from the collective psyche of its citizenry and thus every facet of the society of the targeted nation.
