Here is a quote from Steve Job’s commencement speech at Stanford University in June 2005. (The entire speech is posted on Stanford’s website.)

“No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Several years ago the late Steve Jobs made an insightful speech that revealed the secular humanistic worldview he espoused. In essence, he viewed death as something that enabled creativity to continue to flow by jettisoning the old and making way for the new (for new leaders, innovators, new ideas, creativity, etc.).

In his view, there seemed to be no understanding of humanity’s accountability to their Creator (the One who is the genesis of all human creativity) or the reality of the next life. It seems as though the earth is all there was for Jobs.

Secondly, his advice was for us to follow our hearts and not allow other voices and dogmas to dictate the direction of our lives. I find this interesting since it has been widely reported that Jobs ruled Apple with an iron fist, demanding total control and even belittling people he didn’t agree with (“Biography Zooms In on Talents and Flaws of Steve Jobs”).

It seems as though Jobs himself utilized “dogma” to make Apple great. He knew that for Apple to be efficient everyone had to speak the same thing, keep confidentiality, be fiercely loyal, follow his blueprint, keep his commandments, and conform to Apple’s culture.

If Jobs was consistent he would have realized that if he, as the founder of Apple, needed to have complete control in order to harness his individual genius, how much more the Creator of the earth would also demand conformity, use a blueprint (the Bible) as a model for behavior, and also demand loyalty (e.g. “You shall have no other gods before me” Exodus 20:3).

Unfortunately for Jobs, if he hasn’t already, it is too late for him to reconcile with the Master Brain and Designer of the cosmos. Implicit within his secular humanistic worldview was praise for human genius without acknowledging or giving glory to the only real Creator. He knows now better than most that his individual genius was only possible because he was made in the image and likeness of this Creator of the universe (Genesis 1:26), who alone gave him the capacity to be self-aware, to think, create, dream and design products that have revolutionized the earth realm.

If he would have given glory to God while on the earth, his creativity would have transcended this life and lasted throughout eternity. Now, I’m afraid his legacy will be limited to the memories of those who will continue to use Apple and other similar products.

Finally, Jobs now understands that even the logo of his company, which features an Apple with a bite taken out of it, was a symbol of the fall of humankind (Genesis 3:1-8). This resulted in every person sinning and falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) and the wages of sin, which is death (Romans 6:23).

Even the genius of Steve Jobs couldn’t find a cure for cancer or defeat physical death. My prayer is that he somehow made peace with God before he passed on to the next life so he would not have also experienced spiritual death.###
