Many readers of this publication are familiar with WND.com or WorldNetDaily as it was known for so many years.
SLM has republished a number of articles originally published by WND. I have personally been spiritual enriched and informed by WND, and greatly appreciate its existence in the cyberspace it occupies. There really is nothing else like WND in existence today.
But, right now the media company and its founders personally are facing the fight of their lives.
Joseph and Elizabeth Farah, born-again believers, founded the company more than 20 years ago as the first independent online news source and has ultimately become the largest Christian content site in the world.
Despite WND’s audience in the millions, it was a shock to many to hear Joseph Farah’s urgent cries for financial help as WND reached what he called “an existential threat” several weeks ago. And WND is not alone among the “independent media” that followed in the wake of WND trailblazing.
Over the years, WND has become an independent Christian book publisher and a movie producer as well.
The problem, Farah explains, is an active effort by what he calls “the Internet cartel” to destroy all independent voices, including Christian and conservative.
“It’s no longer about Google and Facebook and Twitter and the rest of the masters of the Internet universe just creating an uneven playing field to promote their own worldly and ‘progressive’ views,” he said. “Now it has become an effort to extinguish these dissenting views in a scorched-earth policy.” We at SLM know firsthand the validity of these statements.
It comes in the form of advertising restrictions that cause dropping revenues when they should be increasing, search-engine algorithms that punish the independent media for their views and applying different sets of rules for their friends and their enemies, Farah says.
“WND is hardest hit because it has never been well capitalized and is not associated with any big investors – my wife and I being the biggest,” he said. “There’s so little room for error or dropping ad revenues that impact everyone.”
As a result, Farah has been conducting a daily campaign for donations from subscribers and visitors to supplement the dramatic drop in advertising revenues. He is encouraged by the outpouring of support which has surpassed $150,000 in a matter of weeks. Yet, the attacks have forced layoffs, pay cuts and what he characterizes as “lots of stress.”
Farah has been asking for prayers, too. And many have been responsive, he adds.
In an email with the subject line “Hanging on by a thread and a prayer…” Farah candidly revealed the unfortunate fact that WND has received less than 40% of its needed goal of $200,000 by March 1st.
He stated in the email plea, “As most of you prepare for the upcoming weekend, please remember us. We’ve had to let many good people go just to stay in business. Others are working at subsistence levels. Some of us are working around the clock so that you can’t see how shorthanded we are.”
This is tragic, and just demonstrates how urgent the financial need is, as well as how severe the need for prayer is at this hour.
We at SLM strongly urge you to pray for WND, all their laborers and their families at this time of financial stress that trickles down to everyone involved.
We also strongly encourage — no, we URGE — anyone interested in supporting WND, a strong voice for Bible-based evangelical Christianity and morality, to support the company in prayer and financial support here. And, maybe even send them a brief email note to let everyone at WND know how much you appreciate them and are praying for them! It would mean a lot! Thank you.
